Hiker finds 'abandoned farmhouse' in hills but is 'sad' after discovery inside

A Welsh rambler recently stumbled upon an abandoned farmhouse in the hills, but confessed he was left feeling "sad" after making a heartbreaking discovery inside. Dan, known as the Welsh Hiker on TikTok, recently posted a video of himself exploring the house, located in Powys.

He identified the property as Pantau Farmhouse in Aberedw. Describing the house as "abandoned", and took the opportunity to explore it during one of his walks; however, he wasn't prepared for what he found when he opened the door. The video reveals the property in a state of disrepair, with smashed windows and belongings strewn about. Cupboards are open with bottles and jars left behind and rooms are falling apart.

Despite parts of the house being destroyed, some elements remain intact, like an empty armchair. Coats hang on hangers and a kettle still sits on the stove once used daily by the previous occupants. Abandoned buildings are in abundance in certain rural areas, including this spooky primary school.

But, back to the farmhouse - it was these remnants of a past life that led Dan to feel so melancholy, as he admitted it deeply affected him. Despite the property being "amazing", he couldn't help but ponder about the people who once called it home and what became of them.

Alongside the footage, he penned: "An amazing building with plenty of history behind it. What I found inside was truly amazing, but at the same time quite sad, knowing that a family had once lived here and left many of their belongings behind."

After the video went viral, viewers confessed they could empathise with his sentiments. One person commented: "Wow, quite eerie with all their belongings still there."

In response, Dan said: "It was the jackets on the hook that got me."

It felt as though the inhabitants had simply "disappeared", according to those who watched the footage.

Back in July, the property was featured in the list of Britain's most endangered buildings, which include those most at risk of total dereliction or demolition and being lost forever. This was previously announced by conservation charity, SAVE Britain's Heritage, and includes five Welsh properties - a mansion, a farmhouse, a cottage, a much-loved tourist attraction and a slice of south Wales industrial past.

Pantau was among the few properties featured on the register, with SAVE describing this Grade II listed farm complex as featuring a "gorgeous whitewashed house with stone stacks and a lean-to bakehouse."

Cadw officially listed the building in 2004, noting "notwithstanding some loss of fabric to the rear, for its special architectural interest as an early C19 farmstead retaining original detail and its overall C19 character."
